About Generation Wave
Background of Generation Wave Organization
Generation Wave is a political and human rights activists’ organization founded in October 2007 after the Saffron Revolution. With the objectives of restoring human rights and democracy in Burma, GW has been conducting many underground non-violence activities such as mobilizing and motivating the public through different campaigns. GW promotes democracy, peace and human rights by empowering human rights defenders, civil society organizations and youth to engage in the political and social reform process in Myanmar. GW documents human rights violations and advocates for law and policy reforms, human rights compliance and the democratization of state institutions. Since the February 2021 coup, GW has been active in the Spring Revolution, focusing on supporting the civil resistance movement, encouraging military defections, and promoting economic boycotts of military-owned businesses. GW remains committed to advancing human rights and democracy in Burma in all areas of its work.
Generation Wave is a principled non-violent organization and it has been participating in and driving the political movement in Myanmar from non-violent resistance, providing expertise in this regard. GW strengthens the capacities of human rights defenders for efficient human rights protection and for mitigation of negative repercussions for their security. GW strengthens civil society actors and youth activists by providing awareness raising and skills trainings for nonviolent activism to enhance their informed participation in the democratizing process. GW advocates both nationally and internationally – for the protection of civil and political rights, in particular in regard to international mechanisms of accountability.
